La Margineda is a strategic piece of land, set in a privileged location, and is therefore one of the most important plots of land in the Andorran Valleys. Its location is a compulsory gateway to the Andorran Valleys and France, and its military, political and tax role has been essential down the centuries.

Throughout the centuries, La Margineda has been a place for control, for the affirmation of political power, for the payment of taxes and tolls, and the most important place in military campaigns between medieval lords for the dominance of the region.

Until recently, the Enclar castle and the chapel of Sant Vicenç d’Enclar were the only evidence of this strategic place, but the fortress discovered in

2007 will reinforce the importance of La Margineda as a geostrategic zone in Andorra, the County of Urgell, the Bishopric of Urgell and the County of Foix.

The old name for La Margineda was Somplosa and it only appears in two very ancient scrolls of 904 and 907 in which there appear cessions of this piece of land in favour of Sunifred, Count of Urgell.

This place, documented for more than 1100 years, was a civilised area with a name and an economic value with the existence of two fortresses.

The plot of land has belonged to the Molines family since 1841.
