Restoration of eighty metalwork pieces

The Cultural Heritage Department of Andorra and Molines Patrimonis have presented today the end result of the restoration of an outstanding set of metalwork objects found at La Roureda de la Margineda.

The restoration has ensured the good state of conservation of the pieces in addition to contributing to the knowledge of La Roureda de la Margineda archaeological site. The project has comprised a total of 79 metalwork pieces (67 of iron, 11 of bronze and one copper coin) bearing witness to various facets of everyday life at this site in the past. There are implements connected with household activities (pothooks, scissors, keys, knives and a bronze kettle,…); objects relating to clothing and personal hygiene (razors, rings, buckles,…); other objects used for craftwork and farming activities (billhooks, sickle, punches, a hammer, horseshoes, a gimlet, cowbells ,…); instruments involved in war and hunting (swords, arrowheads, spear tips,…) and other things connected with furnishings and construction (fish traps, rivets, door latches,…).

The owner of the site, Molines Patrimonis, defrayed the cost of an initial restoration project on a set of 14 pieces in the year 2010. The high quality and great interest of other metalwork objects discovered at the site and their state of conservation led to the decision to select a group of particularly valuable pieces and to have them restored at the Movable Cultural Heritage Restoration Centre of Catalonia . The first agreement was signed with this institution in 2016 for the restoration of seventy-odd pieces and an addendum was signed the following year for the restoration of the bronze kettle.
