What can you do during your stay in Andorra? Visit the archaeological site of La Margineda!
Andorra is a country with an important cultural and historical heritage: with more than 15 Romanesque churches from the 11th and 12th centuries, and a valley, the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, declared a World Heritage Cultural Landscape by UNESCO in 2004. This historical heritage has been expanded with a new proposal: the Margineda site.
An activity in Andorra for the whole family
The visit to the Margineda site, in Santa Coloma, in the parish of Andorra la Vella, is an activity for adults and children, to enjoy your stay with your family.
The discovery of Andorran archaeological heritage
Since 2007, Molines Patrimonis has financed a dozen excavation campaigns in the Roureda de la Margineda, which have allowed the discovery of one of the most important medieval sites documented in the Principality and one of the most outstanding in the southern Pyrenees. The excavations have been carried out on land belonging to the Cardelús-Maestre family, owner of the Molines Patrimonis company. The latest campaigns, since 2010, have had the collaboration of the Government of Andorra through subsidies aimed at restoring and conserving cultural heritage. Thus, together with the Balma de la Margineda, Juverri, the Roc d’Enclar or Camp Vermell, the Roureda de la Margineda constitutes one of the most relevant enclaves for learning about the history of Andorra. The archaeological site occupies an area of more than 4,000 m2, of which about 1,500 m2 have been excavated.
During the different excavation campaigns, thousands of objects from the Middle Ages have been recovered, mainly made of ceramics, iron and bronze, which have allowed us to discover what life was like for our ancestors. All these findings have forced us to reconsider some essential aspects of the medieval history of Andorra. In the summer of 2012, the Margineda site opened its doors to the public to offer a “journey to the heart of Andorra’s history”.

Snow sports
Andorra offers, both in summer and winter, a conducive environment for practicing sports, but the country is especially known for its ski resorts that enjoy high-end facilities and services. The country has 3 internationally renowned resorts: Grandvalira, Vallnord and La Rabassa.

Grandvalira and Vallnord are among the most important ski resorts on the European continent! Grandvalira hosted the Women’s Ski World Cup final for the first time in 2012 on the l’Àliga slope, located in the Soldeu – El Tarter sector. In 2016, the resort was chosen again to host a Women’s Ski World Cup event. More recently, in March and April 2018, Grandvalira hosted, respectively, the Total Fight Masters of Freestyle and the Kilometer Throw World Cup, and in 2019 it hosted the Alpine Skiing World Cup final on the Àliga and Avet slopes. The Vallnord resort is also well known for its summer sports activities and events, such as the organization of the Mountain Bike World Cup.
Mountain biking and cycling in the Principality
Mountain biking is also an activity with a strong presence in Andorra. The Vallnord resort has hosted on several occasions, in its well-known Bike Park and Wood Park, MTB World Cup events organized by the International Cycling Union (UCI).
Andorra has a long cycling tradition and legendary races, such as the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España, include Andorran ports in their main stages. Andorra is becoming a destination for cycle tourism and a regular residence for some professionals in the sector. We also highlight other events related to cycling such as the Gran Fondo, and La Purito Andorra, which brings together more than 2000 participants from 14 different countries. If instead of organized activities and events what you want is to enjoy the magnificent nature of the Principality, you can go on signposted paths and circuits and discover extraordinary landscapes.

If you want to enjoy the Andorran landscapes while hiking, come to Andorra in the summer and you will be able to climb the highest peaks of the country. 90% of the country’s surface is covered by forests, crisscrossed by wonderful paths that allow you to appreciate the wealth of local fauna and flora.
At the Andorran tourist offices you can purchase the hiking guide Rutes d’Andorra (€6) which includes the itineraries, with details on the difficulty levels and elevation changes, of more than 60 excursions.
